MacBook battery cycle count explained
A cycle is cumulative use of 100 percent of battery capacity. Two 50-percent discharges can therefore add up to one cycle even when neither day took the battery from full to empty.
Cycle count is cumulative, not a plug count
Connecting the charger does not increment the cycle counter by itself. macOS tracks the equivalent full capacity used across one or more sessions. Anode surfaces the system count beside current health and saves it with history so sudden unexpected changes are easier to notice.
Maximum cycle count varies by model
Many modern MacBook models list a maximum cycle count of 1,000, while older models can have lower limits. Use Apple’s current table for the exact model rather than assuming one universal number. Reaching the listed count does not instantly disable the Mac, but performance may diminish.
Read cycles together with condition and runtime
A low count does not guarantee perfect health, and a high count does not by itself prove immediate failure. Compare macOS condition, maximum capacity and your observed runtime. That combined view is more useful than chasing the smallest possible cycle number.
