MacBook battery guide

Anode, AlDente, coconutBattery or macOS: which battery tool fits?

A charging controller and a battery monitor solve different problems. Start with the question you want answered: change a charging limit, inspect several devices, or understand the pattern behind power readings.

Written by Anode’s developer using the vendors’ public feature pages. This is not an independent benchmark, a lifespan test or a claim that one app is best for every Mac. Anode 1.1.1 is now available as a free download with an optional one-time Pro purchase. Its release availability was checked on 7 October 2026.

Start with macOS for built-in charging controls

Apple’s Optimised Battery Charging can delay charging beyond 80 percent based on your routine. On Apple-silicon Macs running macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later, Charge Limit lets you choose a limit between 80 and 100 percent. If those controls meet your needs, you may not need another app to set a limit. Check your exact model and macOS version.

AlDente: choose it for additional charging control

AlDente’s published features include a charge limiter and discharge controls, with features such as schedules and heat protection in its Pro offering. It also lists power-flow information. Do not assume a negative battery reading means a faulty charger when intentional discharge is enabled. Consult AlDente’s current compatibility and feature documentation before choosing it.

coconutBattery: choose it for Mac, iPhone and iPad information

coconutBattery publishes live battery information for Mac, iPhone and iPad, saved battery-health information and menu-bar details. Its Plus offering includes features such as a lifetime analyzer and notifications. If comparing several Apple devices is your primary job, inspect its device-specific support and editions. Anode does not offer iPhone or iPad battery diagnostics.

Anode: an observation-first power timeline

Anode 1.1.1 focuses on live signed battery watts, local charge and temperature history, charging-session summaries and explanations of repeated patterns. Its free view covers 24 hours; a one-time Pro unlock adds longer views and CSV export. Anode does not set a charging limit or run calibration cycles. It is a monitor, not a replacement for charging-control software or Apple Diagnostics.

Decide with your own routine, not a promised lifespan

If you need a limit, review macOS and a charging controller. If you need device details across Mac and iOS, review coconutBattery. If you want to revisit when net power, heat or charging sessions changed on one Mac, review Anode’s history. Compare compatibility, available measurements and purchase terms on the current vendor pages. None of this comparison demonstrates that Anode extends battery life or outperforms these tools.
